As an Orlando Museum of Art wedding photographer, I got to witness one of the most fully-committed theme weddings of my career. Valentine’s Day in Orlando isn’t just a day for celebrating love — for Marilyn and Daniel, it was the day they brought a full 70s aesthetic to life inside the museum. Both musicians, Marilyn and Daniel met through mutual friends in a band, so it’s no surprise they’re the kind of couple who show up fully as themselves. Bright colors, velvet, a red carpet aisle, and a vintage Volkswagen bus all made an appearance. In fact, every detail was an homage to the decade they love.

Getting Ready + First Look

To start, the day began at the Alfond Inn in Winter Park, a boutique hotel known for its own contemporary art collection — a fitting place for two art-loving musicians to start their morning. Marilyn stayed relaxed as she sat for makeup, laughing with her bridesmaids and soaking in the moment.

Afterward, Daniel and Marilyn met for a first look in a private courtyard garden. There, they exchanged their first words as an almost-married couple and let their nerves and excitement show. Next, we walked the hotel grounds for couple portraits among the Alfond Inn’s own contemporary art collection — a nice preview of the art-filled day ahead. From there, a limo carried them to the museum.

Once we arrived, we also took advantage of the surrounding downtown Orlando scenery, along with the galleries inside, for couple portraits. Marilyn, meanwhile, wore a sparkly, sleeveless white gown with a leg slit, while Daniel wore a black suit with flared pants and a ruffled shirt — full 70s glamour.

An Orlando Museum of Art Wedding Ceremony

First, the ceremony took place on the museum’s exterior patio, which the team set up with a bubble ceremony arch and a red velvet carpet running the length of the aisle. Meanwhile, live violinists played as guests took their seats, and a vintage Volkswagen bus, doubling as a photo booth, sat nearby. Bold purples and reds carried the color story through the space.

Daniel’s father officiated, and the couple’s vows struck the perfect balance of quirky and heartfelt. As a result, there wasn’t a dry eye — or a straight face — in the crowd, myself included.

Cocktail Hour in the Gallery

From the ceremony, guests moved into the museum’s main gallery for cocktail hour. There, a live band played, and guests got the rare chance to wander the atrium and take in the art on display. Additionally, a striking blown-glass installation anchored the space as its centerpiece. Meanwhile, museum security stayed close by throughout the evening to keep the art protected — a nice reminder of just how unique this venue is for a wedding. From the atrium, guests could also catch glimpses into the surrounding gallery halls.

Meanwhile, the planners finalized the reception space. White velvet linens and vintage vinyl records from 70s icons like Fleetwood Mac and The Beatles filled the room, while vintage music videos were projected onto the walls. Overall, it was easily one of the most personal, well-themed receptions I’ve photographed.

The most unique moment of the night? The couple performed part of the live entertainment themselves. First, Marilyn sang and Daniel played drums alongside members of their band in the atrium. Afterward, they rejoined their guests to celebrate as live band Raspberry Pie carried the party forward. Finally, the night wrapped with a bubble send-off, sending Daniel and Marilyn off in true celebratory fashion.

Overall, Daniel and Marilyn poured so much of who they are into this wedding. It made for one of the most memorable days I’ve had the privilege of photographing.
